No New Leads in Robbery at Johnston Dollar General

web posted January 21, 2013

JOHNSTON – Johnston Police are no closer to identifying the two suspects in the robbery at the Lee Street Dollar General Store around 9:30 Friday night. Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston said that a review of the video surveillance footage is not enough to make a positive identification of the suspects. "We're going to need the public to step up, and they usually do, to help us find out who is responsible," Aston said.

The two suspects, both standing about 5' 8" with slender builds, rushed the cashier while he had the register till open and stole the cash in the drawer and placed it in a red backpack.

"They found about $300 in cash where the suspects ran between the store and the 3-Way (store)," Chief Aston said. The clerk chased after the two men and returned moments later to report the robbery to the manager.

Johnston and Edgefield Police as well as Sheriff's Deputies converged on the scene in an effort to prevent the two men from escaping. That effort failed as did the use of bloodhounds which led to a dead end trail a block away. It is unknown if the pair had a car waiting or foot traffic in the area disrupted the bloodhound's ability to track to suspects.

The two men were said to be black males around 5' 8" tall with one wearing a camo hoodie and blue jeans and the second wearing a dark colored hoddie with a red backpack. One of the men may have been wearing a "scull cap" with the Washington Redskins insignia. No age range was available.

"We don't know if it was locals or someone from out of town," Chief Aston said. Chief Aston said somebody saw something or knows something that could aid their investigation. "Sometimes it takes a few days for information to get to us. But it always does."

Anyone with information should call the Edgefield County Sheriff's Dispatch at 803-637-5337. You do not need to give your name to provide information.
