Edgefield County Republican Women’s group one step closer to reality
web
posted January 22, 2010
JOHNSTON – The
fledgling Edgefield County
Republican Women held their first public meeting Thursday night to lay
the groundwork for gaining a charter to make the group a force in local
politics. Mary Allison Pettigrew (Left) welcomed attendees with an
impassioned
speech about the shape of the political situation in not only Edgefield
County, the state, but also the nation stating to the present national
leadership in America, “where you want to take us is not where we are
going, and we are letting you know.”
Pettigrew said the purpose of the group was to promote the basic
principles set up by the Founding Fathers recognizable as supporting
liberty “set up for us.” Mrs. Pettigrew said that it is important that
those attending the preliminary meeting should be involved in the
political process, but also the younger women in Edgefield County.
“Let the power of one multiply into the power of numbers,” she said,
encouraging those attending to reach out to others to grow and build
the group in the county. “It was the power of numbers that elected
Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi and their socialist agenda. But those are
the numbers of the misinformed and self-indulgent.”
Mrs. Pettigrew said that they needed to respond in “bigger numbers” and
“the power of truth and the guidance of the Constitution.” She stated
that if they came together with a conservative platform, dedication to
founding principles, “we will succeed in securing the future of freedom
and prosperity for those who will follow us”.
“Don’t forget”, she said, “For there to be Founding Fathers, there had
to be Founding Mothers. Let’s show Democrats and Republicans in name
only that the British got off easy.”
After a series of guest speakers, including Rep. Nikki Haley running
for Governor, the group got down to the logistics of founding the group
and what it could mean to the county.
Dr. Anne Hancock, President of the Greenwood County Republican Women,
said being involved in politics at the local, state and national level
was important. “It is important that you be committed to this party.”
Something she said needed to continue past the primaries in an election
year. After selecting and supporting a candidate that may lose during a
primary, many stay home and do not participate in the process. “We’re
the worst one for doing that,” she said.
“The Democrats circle the wagons,” she said, something Republican seems
to dismiss because their candidate did not win. “We can’t do that.”
Dr. Hancock said she has been involved in the Republican Party for a
long time and she has never been afraid to stand her ground, even when
it meant she was unpopular. “Did they always like what I had to say?
No, but they respected it because I would stand up and say it.”
She referred to the recent election of Scott Brown in Massachusetts
saying it was the efforts of those who supported the party, gave of
their time, “and never got off message,” that gave Sen. Brown-elect his
victory. Many of those voices pushing the campaign were women, she said.
That success can be duplicated across the country and the state, she
said. “Don’t talk about it, commit yourself”. She encouraged everyone
present to bring someone else to the next meeting to make the group
stronger.
Mary McAbee, President of the South Carolina Federation of Republican
Women gave advice on the group’s formation including writing the Bylaws
first and then selecting a nomination committee to select the group’s
leaders.
Once those steps were completed a charter would have to be filed with
the state executive committee that would then be passed on to the
national level who grants the charter.
She suggested that the steering committee continue their work in that
direction and then hold public meetings to elect those who would lead
the group after the membership grew.
No votes were held at the meeting and another meeting will be announced
for next month.
With no other business the meeting was adjourned for those attending to
speak one on one with the speakers.
