Burglars Spend Day Stealing Copper from Home

web posted January 22, 2013

JOHNSTON – Johnston Police are investigating a burglary and copper theft from a Gray Street home that took place on Friday. However, this is not your "run of the mill" copper theft - the person or persons spent most of the day in and under the uninhabited home leaving far more in damages than they stole in copper.

Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston said his department was notified of the situation by an Edgefield County Sheriff's Investigator after finding something suspicious about the home and went to investigate and alerting the Johnston Police.

Chief Aston said the person or persons knocked holes in the walls in several locations to steel copper tubing and wiring. They went underneath the home and in the basements ripping out all the copper they could find.

In addition, they took a refrigerator as well.

"We believe it took them (the thieves) the better part of the day," to complete the theft Aston said. The home is rather isolated and it is believed a vehicle was parked behind the house where it would not be seen from the roadway.

Though the official report is not available at this time, damages could reach into the tens of thousands of dollars.

The case is under active investigation.
