Here's Your Card: Tasers work, resisting arrest does not

web posted January 29, 2008
JOHNSTON – A Johnston man learned the hard way that the Johnston Police have tasers and know how to use them. Just after midnight Saturday, Johnston Police were called to a disturbance at John’s Club. Officers arrived and found the man standing outside the club yelling and cursing at the owner. The owner told police the man was causing problems and she wanted him removed from the premises.

Officers informed the man that he was going to have to leave. According to police reports, the man said that he did not “have to (expletive) leave”. It was then the man was told he was under arrest and to place his hands behind his back. The man refused and began walking away so one of the officers again ordered him to comply and again the man refused. One officer drew his taser and ordered the man to stop and place his hands behind his back or he would be tased.

The man complied until the other officer began trying to put handcuffs on at which time he pulled away. Once again the man was told he would be tased if he did not comply and he repeated the scenario. The third time the man faced the officers and refused to comply and, as promised, he was tased.

The man fell to the ground and was taken into custody without further problems. After being checked at the Emergency Room he was transported to the Edgefield Detention Center where officers found two small plastic baggies containing what is believed to be marijuana in his clothing.

Steven Vernon Williams, 42, of Rocky Creek Road, Johnston, was charged with disorderly conduct at the time and later to be served with warrants for resisting arrest, possession with the intent to distribute marijuana, and distribution of marijuana in the proximity of a school or park. Police reports also indicate that Mr. Williams was intoxicated at the time of his arrest.

Had Mr. Williams complied with the officers first request to simply leave the club he would have not faced any charges, thus resulting in the nomination for a Here’s Your Card recognition.
