Rep. Clyburn: “I’m certainly not running for Senate again”

web posted February 1, 2008
JOHNSTON – Rep. Bill Clyburn (D) said Thursday night at the Edgefield County Intergovernmental Meeting that he would not be running for the District 25 Senate seat this year. “It was a great experience and I just wanted to say to all of you, I’m certainly not running for Senate again, especially against Shane.”

Rep. Clyburn said he has decided that the best thing to do to serve his constituents is to focus on the work that needs to be done, “than to spend time campaigning. I just wanted to make that clear.”

Sen. Shane Massey (R) faces re-election in November after winning the Senate seat left vacant when longtime Democrat Senator Tommy Moore resigned last year. Massey became not only the youngest Senator in the state but also the first Republican to ever hold the District 25 Senate seat.

Though pressure no doubt came from state Democrat Party leaders for Rep. Clyburn to square off against Massey again due to the slim margin of victory, running for the seat this time would have forced Rep. Clyburn into an all or nothing challenge as he too is up for re-election this year. Were Clyburn to run for the Senate seat and lose, he would also lose his seat in the House of Representatives which would have been up for grabs.

No Democrat has stepped forward
at this time to announce their intention of challenging Sen. Massey in this year’s election.
