Man escapes arrest after car chase, wreck web posted February 6, 2007 JOHNSTON – A Johnston Police Officer was notified by a reserve officer that a man who’s driver’s license was under suspension was seen driving in Johnston on Saturday night. When the responding officer spotted the man he was at a convenience store and he turned in the opposite direction. The officer turned around and the man sped away. As the man ran a stop sign at the corner of Walker and Edisto Streets the officer initiated a traffic stop but the driver increased his speed and fled. Once the man sped up the officer gave pursuit with other officers joining in. The man fled down Smith Street and then onto May Street at a high rate of speed. While turning off of May Street onto Lee Street the man almost struck the personal vehicle of the reserve officer and a vehicle traveling on the road. The chase continued on Wren Drive to Dove Street and back onto Edisto Street until the driver turned on Waterworks Road and then Holmes Pond Road where he crashed the vehicle near Yonce Pond Road in a peach field. The man jumped from the now disabled vehicle and began running across a field with police in foot pursuit for several hundred yards. The man was able to elude arrest even after additional officers and Sheriff’s Deputies tried to set up a perimeter and search. Johnston Police are seeking warrants for the 28 year-old Greenwood man. No arrests have been made in the case as of Monday. For
