Video Surveillance Lands Two in Jail Following Simple Fender-Bender

web posted February 12, 2013

JOHNSTON – Johnston Police were called to work a minor fender-bender where one driver ran into the back of another near the intersection of Lee and Calhoun Streets Friday around 6 am. When the officer arrived, 45-year-old Oscar Stevens told the officer he was driving and not paying attention when he hit the car in front of him. The officer completed the wreck report and issued Stevens a ticket for driving too fast for conditions. After Stevens and his "passenger" left the scene the driver of the car hit expressed his suspicion that Stevens was not the driver.

The driver stated that Stevens approached the scene of the collision from the Shell Station and was not driving the car that hit him.

The officer went to the Shell Station and reviewed the video surveillance footage which showed the collision taking place and Stevens parking his truck and then walking to the scene. After viewing the footage the officer noticed Stevens approaching his truck to leave and stopped him in the parking lot. After giving Stevens repeated times to tell the truth of how the collision took place Stevens refused and was arrested for providing police to false information.

Stevens was booked into custody at the Edgefield County Detention Center and his truck towed from the store.

The officer later went to the home of the owner of the car Stevens claimed to be driving, but she was not home. Later she called after being informed that the officer had been at her home. The officer told the woman he had a few questions to ask about the collision and she met with the officer at the Johnston Police Department.

Again the officer gave the woman, identified as Tomeca Shantrell Bush, 24, multiple opportunities to tell the officer what really happened. She repeatedly stated that Stevens was driving the car when the wreck took place, an incident report states.

Bush was then arrested and transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center and charged with too fast for conditions, driving under suspension, and giving false information to police.

A copy of the video footage of the crash was also placed into evidence.
