Gun raises stakes during traffic stop

web posted February 14, 2007

JOHNSTON – Traffic stops are routine for law enforcement officers but sometimes a simple traffic stop can make even a seasoned officer’s heart skip a beat. Saturday night a Johnston Police Officer observed a car that appeared to be speeding. Once confirmed on radar that the driver was traveling 52 mph in a 35 mph zone the officer gave pursuit. The driver was crossing over the centerline several times as the officer got close enough to make the stop. All things seemed fairly routine at the time.

The driver stopped on Lee Street and the officer and a back-up officer approached the car and asked the man for his driver’s license and information when they observed a gun laying on the driver’s floorboard. Both officers drew their service weapons and ordered the man to place his hands on the dashboard and not to move. The man complied and the officer’s retrieved the pistol, which turned out to be a pellet gun.

The driver, Bobby Lee Simmons. 59, of Johnston, was arrested after it was discovered his driver’s license was suspended. In addition Mr. Simmons had an open container of alcohol in the car. He was transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center and charged with driving under suspension 3rd offense, DUI, and for the open container of alcohol.
