 Johnston man flown from crash scene web posted February 19, 2008  JOHNSTON – A
Johnston man was seriously
injured in a crash just after 3 pm Monday and had to be flown from the
crash site by a MCG helicopter. The crash occurred when the man was
driving westbound on Waterworks Road in a late model Cadillac when he
left the right hand side of the road after exiting a curve and struck
the side of the bridge. (Left)The car became airborne and slammed into the bank of the opposing side of the bridge and flipping at least once more before coming to rest on its roof. By the time the first rescuers arrived on the scene the man was able to crawl partially out the passenger window.  After the initial
assessment of the man’s injuries the request for a
helicopter went out and Sheriff’s Deputies and Johnston Firemen secured
a landing zone in a nearby field while EMS and First Responders began
immobilizing the man for transport. The man complained of leg, hip,
shoulder and was obviously suffering with a severely broken right arm.
The Johnston Fire Department was summoned to the scene originally due
to gas leaking from the wreckage.Once the man was loaded onto the stretcher he was transported by ambulance to the landing zone. He was then flown to the MCG Trauma Center in Augusta (Above). His current condition is not available. The man told authorities that he swerved to miss a deer and lost control of the car. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
