JOHNSTON – Johnston Police Officer James Brooker was on routine patrol when he noticed several deer running in front of his patrol car. Officer Brooker tried to stop but was unable to avoid striking one of the deer. The front of the patrol car was damaged and minor damage occurred to the front driver's side quarter panel. Although estimates have not been received, Mayor Dean Campbell said the cost to the town would be $1,000, the town’s insurance deductible
if the damages exceeded that amount Anything under the $1,000 amount would be paid by the town he said.

Office Brooker said he was driving at 35 mph at the time of the collision on Monument Drive near Roland Avenue. Mayor Campbell said the town was awaiting the arrival of the new guards the Town Council voted to purchase at the February council meeting. Installing the guards would prevent damage to patrol cars in such collisions. Once they arrive, Jim Satcher Ford in Johnston will be doing the installation.

The last collison involving a deer occurred last month when Johnston Police Officer Joseph Mathis was returning from the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office when he struck a deer on Highway 23 near Stonehenge Road.

The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office saw a great reduction in claims after installing the guards on patrol cars, which lowered the liability issues for the Sheriff’s Office.
