Simple Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Bust

web posted February 25, 2014

JOHNSTON A Johnston Police Officer made a routine traffic stop at the intersection of May Street and Walker Street for failure to use a turn signal late Friday night. Usually the driver gets a simple verbal warning to use turn signals and they are on their way. However, when the officer approached the white Caprice driven by 26-year-old Porsha Morica Weaver he could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the car and called for a nearby Sheriff's Deputy to respond.

Ms. Weaver was asked to step to the rear of the car and was told about the odor of marijuana and, according to an incident report, claimed there was "nothing in the car". She gave officers permission to search the car.

Inside of Ms. Weaver's purse was a plastic bag containing what was believed to be a small amount of marijuana. A black bag found between the driver's seat and the passenger's seat contained four large bags with what was believed to be marijuana. As the search continued a quart jar was found to be filled with suspected marijuana as well.

An open bottle of liquor was also found between the front seats as well as a box of plastic baggies with several laying loose on the back seat.

Weaver was arrested and charged with an ABC violation (open liquor bottle) and possession with intent to distribute marijuana and then transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center for booking. The car was towed from the scene.

In all, nearly a half pound of marijuana was seized as evidence. No street value of the drugs were available.

Weaver was released on Saturday on a total of $5,262 in bonds.
