Police, Deputies deal with several fights Saturday night

web posted February 26, 2008
JOHNSTON – A Johnston bar is at the center of a fight that has Johnston Police trying to sort through several suspects after fights broke out at the bar and then surrounding areas after the bar was closed. Just before midnight Saturday officers in the area saw several people running out of John’s Club located at 320 Addison Street and went to investigate. Johnston Police and Sheriff’s Deputies arrived and found one man exiting the club bleeding from his right eye.

While officers were trying to obtain information as to what took place in the bar another fight broke out in the parking lot. Officers broke up the fight but due to the large crowd they reported they were unable to identify who was actually involved in the fight. During the second fight the first victim left the scene and arrived at the Edgefield County Hospital Emergency Room a short time later.

Additional units were summoned to the scene including Sheriff’s Deputies and Edgefield Police Officers. It took police almost an hour to clear the scene and disperse the large crowd.

Moments later Officers were called to a fight at the May Street Apartments nearby. After arriving and dispersing the crowd officers were then called to another fight at the nearby Edisto Plaza Apartments. Officers arrived and dispersed the crowd there only to be called back to the May Street location.

During the investigation it was found that the man injured at the bar was playing pool with some friends when a fight broke out at the next table. As he tried to get out of the way he was pushed into a table and then attacked by “several” others who began punching him. Once knocked to the floor the group then continued to hit him and then began kicking him on the floor.

Police have the names of at least eight suspects that may have been involved. Officers were clearing the continued crowds until 2 am Sunday. No arrests have been made in the case and the investigation continues. Those involved could face possible lynching charges, which is a felony. The victim in the case was treated and released from the Edgefield Hospital. The extent of his injuries was not available.
