Johnston Man Arrested after Stealing Columbia Woman's Car

web posted March 19, 2014

JOHNSTON A 23-year-old Johnston man has been arrested after his brother reported finding a strange green Honda Accord parked next door at a family member's house. When he asked his brother where the car came from he said he was in Columbia and a woman just jumped out of the car and told him to take it, which he did. As the investigation was underway, there was a lot more to the story that came out.

The man brought the car into his driveway and was able to locate the owner from paperwork inside the car. He called the woman who said her car was stolen the night before and reported it to Columbia Police. Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston said the woman reported a strange man approaching her car creaming and yelling and was afraid and got out of the car thinking she was going to be car-jacked or kidnapped.

Johnston Police arrived at the brother's house and confirmed the car was stolen. When they arrived, the younger brother, Dexter Ramon Smith, was taken into investigative custody as the investigation got underway.

Smith was booked into custody at the Edgefield County Detention Center on a single felony charge of possession of stolen goods. The Accord was valued at $15,000, but was undamaged during the theft and the drive back to Johnston.

The owner was contacted and told where she could pick up her car. She reported it was stolen around 4:30 am on Monday and was happy it was found and undamaged.

It is unknown what charges will be filed against Smith in Columbia for the theft of the car.
