Ten injured in two vehicle crash in Johnston web posted March 23, 2007 JOHNSTON – A multi car crash on Long Cane Road brought Johnston Fire Department personnel, Edgefield County EMS, the Johnston Police Department, and Sheriff's Deputies responding to a reported two car crash involving a 15 passenger van on Long Cane Road near the county line. As First Responders arrived on the scene along with law enforcement the causality account was stated to be at least eight with “several in critical condition”. An AirMed Helicopter was also summoned to the scene. Rescuers requested “every available ambulance” to respond. Every available unit in the county and surrounding areas responded and began setting up a landing zone in a field near Monument Drive. A fence was cut to gain access to a field in order to transport the injured as rescue workers began gaining coordinates of the landing zone to pass on to air traffic controllers. The situation was described as a “mass casualty” event. Emergency personnel from the Johnston Police Department, Fire Department, as well as the Edgefield County EMS and Sheriff's Deputies were on the scene within minutes. A 45-year-old woman was also said to have been ejected from the church van and was airlifted to Columbia. Further details of the crash were not immediately available but at least ten individuals were injured. Traffic on Long Cane Road was brought to a halt as rescuers prepared the injured for transport. At least three were transported on AirMed helicopters dispatched to the scene sources said. Edgefield County EMA Director Mike Casey also responded to the scene to help coordinate the rescue effort. The first patient airlifted was an 11-year-old female that was ejected from one of the vehicles and suffered facial and other body trauma.
