Brush fires keep area departments busy

web posted March 25, 2008
JOHNSTON – A brush fire on the 400 block of Weaver Road consumed at least an acre of land, came very close to two homes, and started burning a shed just before 2 pm Monday. Johnston firefighters arrived a short time later and began fighting the fire as it traveled up a hillside.

The fire was concentrated between two houses and had completely surrounded a small wooden shed behind one of the homes. “We looked out and the fire was all around the shed,” one of the homeowners said. “I told my daughter to call 911 and we got the water hose and began trying to put out the fire to keep it from burning the shed down.”

Johnston firemen were on the scene for well over an hour extinguishing the remaining embers. Where the fire originated was not known nor was it known who might have started the fire.

One of the homeowners said they had conducted some burning of debris over the weekend but that fire was watered down before leaving it unattended.

The Northside Fire Department also responded to a brush fire located near the 700 block of Highway 378 East just after 3 pm. That fire was also brought under control and extinguished a short time later.
