JOHNSTON – The Edgefield County Peach Museum held a VIP viewing of the displays that will be open to the public on April 1, 2006. The Grand Opening will take place along with the Peach Blossom Festival in Johnston on the same day. With some local dignitaries on hand Mayor Dean Campbell and Donna Livingston, President of the Edgefield Chamber of Commerce, welcomed everyone to the ribbon cutting.

Inside everyone enjoyed the displays of old peach boxes, memorabilia, and a presentation to the Pioneers of the Peach Industry in Edgefield County. Among the photo dedications were nine of the pioneers in the area; Lewis Davis “LD” Holmes Sr., Rembert W. Dubose, Horace T. Holmes, Joseph Wilber Yonce Jr., Lawrence William Vann, Lewis F. Holmes Jr., Julius Marshall Vann, and Fred Morris Holmes. Mr. Marshall Vann attended the viewing.

The opening of the museum is just phase one as it is intended to grow both in size, scope,  and content Mayor Campbell said. “This is a great kick-off to the Peach Blossom Festival next Saturday.” Mayor Campbell pointed out how important peaches were to the Town of Johnston, “It has been the economic engine to the community, and it’s great for the economic development being on the Heritage Corridor.”

Donna Livingston said the initial work on the museum began in May of 2002, “we have worked long and hard to see this museum to fruition She offered a special thanks to Bettis Rainsford, Tricia Glenn, and Elizabeth Harm, who was “handed the project command in January 2006 and was told to finish it,” Mrs. Livingston said, “she had until April to have it completed.” The finishing touches were done on March 20.

The museum is presently located in the Edgefield Chamber of Commerce Building at 416 Calhoun Street, Johnston, SC. Regular hours are 8:30 until 12:30 weekdays, or by appointment. You may call the Chamber at 803-275-0010.

EdgefieldDaily.com enjoyed the museum and the history behind peaches in our area. Learn how long a peach tree lives and produces fruit, in addition to how much fruit is produced by each tree. Find out that peaches are not native to North America and learn where they came from in the 1600’s. EdgefieldDaily.com would recommend visiting the museum; it is educational and informative for both young and old.
