Johnston youth hit by alleged drunk driver in parking lot

web posted March 31, 2007

JOHNSTON – Johnston Police were called to the scene of a child being struck in the parking lot of the 3-way Food Store at 385 Lee Street just after 5:30 Thursday afternoon. According to police reports the 11-year-old child was sitting on his bicycle when he was allegedly struck by a car. An ambulance was called to the scene by Officers when they arrived. The driver was found by officers to have a “very strong odor of alcohol” being emitted and was still sitting in his car with the engine running.

Officers asked the man to turn off his car, which he did, but the officer reported he had to put the car in park afterwards. According to the young boy’s brother, when he came out of the store the boy was pulling his bike out from underneath the car.

When Sureshkumar Patel, 44, exited his car he was arrested for driving under the influence and transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center to be booked into custody and released on bond.

The boy was transported by ambulance to the Edgefield County Hospital for treatment of minor injuries he reportedly received in the incident. He was treated and released.
