Citizens Can Now Enter the Relay for Life Event at Johnston Peach Blossom Festival

web posted March 31, 2014

JOHNSTON – Participants can now sign up for the Relay for Life Peach Blossom Stroll, a walk to help raise money to fight cancer, which will be held during this year’s Peach Blossom Festival.

The Stroll will be held May 3, 9 a.m., and will leave from the Edgefield County Chamber of Commerce Office in downtown Johnston. The walkers will head toward Edgefield on Hwy. 23, turn around at the old Beason’s Cleaners, and then return to downtown Johnston, just as the Festival is beginning. The route is 1.6 miles.

No animals or bicycles are allowed. Walkers are encouraged walk as individuals or to form teams and raise money from citizens or businesses who want to sponsor them in the walk.

There is a $20 registration fee due by April 15. Those who pay by that date will receive a free T-shirt. Those who register after that date pay a late registration fee of $25 and will not be eligible for a T-shirt. All registration fees are not refundable.

For more information on the Stroll or to get an application to participate, contact the Edgefield County Chamber of Commerce, any Relay Team Captain, Lynn Rearden or Sharen Fay at Edgefield County Hospital.

Also, the Chamber will hold A Night of Bingo Games on Thursday, May 1, 6 p.m., American Legion Building, 99 Edisto St., Johnston, 6 p.m. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be available for purchase. Proceeds benefit Chamber programs.

The popular Festival is also taking applications for individuals, organizations or businesses interested in being a part of event in these areas:

•    Arts and Crafts: Missy Cleveland , (803) 480-7286; 501 Weaver Road, Johnston, SC 29832, clevelandbrian@bellsouth.net;
•    Parade: Roger Lamb, (803) 275-0438, 505 Roland Ave., Johnston, SC 29832
•    Food Concessions: Noah Peterson, (803) 480-0135, P.O. Box 282, Johnston, SC 29832, amossonsfh@yahoo.com;

In addition to the areas listed above, the Festival has a Friday, May 2, street dance in downtown Johnston, designed especially for families. Steele Justice, a popular local band, will provide the entertainment.

This year’s Johnston Peach Blossom Festival Dance Sponsors are Titan Farms and Dr. Hugh Morgan Family Practice.

Last year, thousands of patrons descended on Johnston to enjoy the day set aside to honor the peach industry, which has been so important in the development of the area. Each year, the Town goes all out with the Festival to remind citizens about the peach industry and to open its arms to visitors.

For more information on the Festival, please contact Debra Aston, (803) 275-2345.

The Johnston Development Corporation, a non-profit volunteer organization, sponsors the Festival. The Corporation works to aid the community in areas such as economic development, education, recreation, historic preservation, tourism, scientific and cultural opportunities, and continued promotion of Johnston.
