One in custody after late night shooting incident in Johnston
web
posted April 2, 2009
JOHNSTON – Johnston Police have one man in
custody after a shooting incident around midnight Tuesday on Sandra
Drive. The reports of a possible fight, loud arguing, and then gunshots
ringing out brought Johnston and Edgefield Police as well as Sheriff’s
Deputies racing to the scene. Though many of those present at the time
refused to cooperate with authorities, 19-year-old John Denzel Drayton
Jr. was arrested and a gun was recovered.
Johnston Investigator Lamaz Robinson said that Drayton is being held on
a custody order while warrants are being obtained for a convicted felon
being in possession of a firearm and discharging a firearm within the
city limits. “I’m not sure if a charge of disorderly conduct might be
added,” Inv. Robinson added.
The sequence of events were touched off when an argument broke out
within a group of people standing outside of homes on the 30 block of
Sandra Drive. One woman reported that she heard the ruckus and called
911 after hearing several gunshots being fired.
The women reported that she saw Drayton cursing loudly and then produce
a weapon and began firing. The woman could not tell officers how many
shots were fired. No one was struck and it is believed, at this time in
the investigation, he fired the weapon in the air.
As police began searching for the then unknown suspect, they saw
Drayton coming out from behind a house the witness reported the suspect
running towards. As Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston was questioning
Drayton, Edgefield Police found the pistol allegedly used in the
shooting a short distance away behind the house in the area he emerged
from.
The pistol was described as a semi-automatic .25 caliber Lorcin Model
L25 with a loaded clip and four remaining rounds. Drayton repeatedly
stated he did not know where the gun came from, although several
witnesses told police they saw him with the gun, incident reports state.
Reports did not indicate if spent shell casing were recovered from the
scene.
During the initial investigation, one of the subjects checked came back
as being a known gang member in Aiken County who was to be considered
armed
and dangerous and police were urged to use caution. Inv. Robinson was
asked if the warning was about Drayton. “I’m, I don’t know about
anything him being a gang member,” Robinson said.
Mr. Drayton is still being held and the investigation is ongoing.
