Police seek suspected shooter
web
posted April 2, 2009
JOHNSTON – Johnston
Police are looking for
a 25-year-old Aiken man in connection to a shooting late Wednesday
night. Gregory Lamont Windless, 25, of Jessica Street, Aiken, is wanted
on multiple charges including attempting to kill a woman when she came
to answer her door. Investigator Lamaz Robinson of the Johnston Police
Department said Windless is to be considered armed and dangerous and
should not be approached. “Anyone that sees him, just call 911 wherever
you are,” Robinson said.
According to Inv. Robinson, the victim was summoned to the door of her
Lanier Street home around 9:45 pm by Windless. When she approached the
door, which had glass panes, “he saw her and then shot at her,”
Robinson said. The bullet traveled through the window but missed its
intended target. “We haven’t recovered the round fired,” Inv. Robinson
said, “but we did recover unfired rounds from where he was standing.”
The recovered bullets were .25 caliber.
Windless fled the area in a light colored car, possibly a Ford Taurus
or Contour type car. “We really don’t know what he’s driving,” Inv.
Robinson said, “or whether he was with someone else at the time.” The
victim never saw the car, however; witnesses told police Windless went
down the road to the dead end and then turned around before making his
escape.
Windless began texting and calling the victim saying he would kill her
if she informed police and, “if he gets locked up he would have someone
kill her for him,” incident reports state. Police were able to make
contact with Windless and he agreed to meet with them at the Police
Department to turn himself in later in the night but never showed up.
“We really want to get him off the streets,” Inv. Robinson said adding
that it would be better if Windless would just turn himself in rather
than running. Windless is described as a black male, 6 feet tall,
weighing around 160 pounds.
Warrants have been obtained against Windless for assault and battery
with the intent to kill (South Carolina’s equivalency of attempted
murder), assault of a high and aggravated nature, discharging a firearm
into a dwelling, and malicious injury to personal property. The case is
currently under investigation and additional charges could be pending
the outcome.
