Wanted man, drugs, guns, cash seized at license checkpoint web posted April 3, 2007 JOHNSTON – Johnston Police Officers, South Carolina Troopers, and Edgefield County Deputies conducted a license check on Friday night in Johnston and in the process arrested a wanted man, seized almost $500 in cash, three guns, and crack cocaine from a single car. Just after midnight Friday night a car approached the license check at the intersection of Lee and Edisto Streets and the driver was asked to present his driver’s license. The man claimed he did not have it with him. After checking with the Department of Motor Vehicles it was discovered Alfonzo Alvin Andrews, 24, of Hart Spring Road, Saluda had a suspended license and a warrant for his arrest in Saluda County. Andrews was arrested on the scene by the Highway Patrol for driving under the influence and driving under suspension. Two passengers in the car were asked to step out of the vehicle when officer’s spotted a hand gun partially wrapped in a blue shirt on the back seat floorboard. The gun was found to have the serial number completely removed but was unloaded. Also found in the blue shirt was a pill bottle containing what is believed to be approximately ten grams of crack cocaine which was also confiscated. All three, Mr. Andrews and his passengers, denied knowing anything about the gun or the drugs. At that time Johnston Police arrested Marshall Butler Jr., 28, of Rocky Creek Road in Johnston, and Clarice Judea Culbreath, 18, of Mount Calvary Road, Johnston and took them into custody. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of two more guns, an unloaded .410 pump shotgun found in a storage area, and a pistol with ten rounds of ammunition in the clip found in the glove compartment. Mr. Andrews was charged with driving under suspension second offence, DUI, an ABC violation and a custody order for additional charges to be filed later. Police reports indicate the additional charges could include possession of a firearm with defaced serial number, possession of crack cocaine with the intent to distribute, possession of crack cocaine with the intent to distribute within the proximity of a school or park, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, and a parole violation. Also seized at the scene was $435.44 in cash and change police reports show. Mr. Marshall has been charged with possession of crack cocaine with the intent to distribute, possession of crack cocaine with the intent to distribute within the proximity of a school or park, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Ms. Culbreath is currently being held on a custody order and no charges were available. For
