Johnston Police continue crackdown on drugs with more arrests

web posted April 18, 2007

JOHNSTON – Johnston Police Chief Christ Aston announced his department has made arrests for crack cocaine trafficking and drug possession in Johnston over the weekend. The arrests came as a result of traffic stops. Johnny Major Lott, 51, of Palm Branch Road in Leesville was arrested and charged with trafficking crack cocaine after finding over 10 grams of the drug in his Ford Explorer.

According to police reports and a press release Mr. Lott was stopped for speeding and was found to have a suspended drivers license. After being arrested Mr. Lott gave consent for officers to search his vehicle and a Johnston Police Officer assisted by an Edgefield County Sheriff’s Deputy discovered the drugs in a sunglass case. Chief Aston said the amount of crack cocaine seized at the scene was nearly double the required 10 grams needed for a trafficking charge.

$173.23 in cash was also seized.

During a previous traffic stop a Johnston Police Officer, again assisted by a deputy, arrested Roland Jamel Johnson, 22, of Addison Street in Johnston and Jordan Bradford Cotes, 28, of May Street in Saluda for possession of marijuana. An undisclosed amount of drugs were also confiscated at the time of the arrests.

Chief Aston said, “I would like to thank my Officers and the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office for doing a great job with helping to make our community safe. It takes teamwork and it surely shows that all the local agencies have such an outstanding working relationship.” Chief Aston also stated, “It shows that no traffic stop is routine. You never know what an Officer might encounter.”

Chief Aston said he would also like to thank the citizens of Johnston for calling with drug information and that they are the eyes and ears for the police. “You can report drug activity and have your name kept anonymous,” the Chief said adding, “I promise you we will find a way to bring the local drug dealers down.”
