Dogs Kill Miniature Horse in Barn

web posted April 22, 2014

JOHNSTON In what appears to have been an ongoing issue of three dogs allowed to run at large and attacking horses kept in a nearby pasture, the situation came to a head Saturday when two of the dogs were shot after killing a miniature horse that was being kept in a barn on the property. Once the attack was discovered, the owners called the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office to file a report.

An incident report stated the owner said three dogs, two smaller brown dogs and a larger black dog with a white chest and blue eyes, were crawling under the fence and attacking and biting horses kept in the pasture in the past. It is unknown if those incidents had been reported.

On Saturday when they went to check on the horses around 9:30 am the two brown dogs were found attacking the 10-month-old paint miniature horse, who was down, inside the barn. The man shot the two brown dogs with a .22 caliber rifle, but the young miniature horse was dead. It was valued at $1,200, according to the report.

The incident report does not state if the black dog was seen taking part in the attack.

The black dog was later found sitting on the porch of a Slide Hill Road home, but the deputy was unable to make contact with the home owner. It remains unknown who owned the two brown dogs.

The case has been turned over to Animal Control for further investigation.
