Johnston father revels in photo of son’s service

web posted April 29, 2008
JOHNSTON – A proud father, who is also a veteran, submitted a photo that included Gregory Winters, 25, who is serving his third tour of duty in the current war and is presently stationed in Afghanistan. “I got a call from a friend who told me about the story,” Paul Winters of Johnston said in a phone interview Monday.

Gregory Winters is shown in the foreground to the right. “How great are the chances of one picture being of an Edgefield County guy?” Winters said.

The article, published by the Associated Press, described the hardships of Marines sent to the remote locations to fight back recent aggression by the Taliban in the northern region in Afghanistan. The photo was taken, Mr. Winters said, after the young men returned from an extended time in the field. "They were playing around after being out so long."

“He’s due back in October,” Mr. Winters said referring to his son, adding that he is looking forward to greeting him on his return. “People don’t realize what these guys go through,” Mr. Winters said.

Mr. Winters identified Justin Rencher of Boise, Idaho, as standing just behind his son in the photo. “That is Greg’s best friend in the Corp."
