Three arrested in theft of scrap metal
web
posted April 29, 2008
JOHNSTON – Three men are in custody after
allegedly stealing over $1,000 worth of scrap iron over the weekend.
Freddie Lee West, 53, and Richard Earl Tiggs, 46, both of Trenton were
arrested Saturday after the theft was discovered, and Cleveland
Robertson, 33, of Johnston was taken into custody Sunday. All three
have been charged with grand larceny jail records showed.
The arrests stem from a Johnston man being called from an individual
stating three men were on his property removing pieces of metal and
placing then on a trailer towed behind a red truck. By the time the
property owner arrived the three men, and the scrap iron, were gone.
The Sheriff’s Office was notified after the identities of the men were
discovered and the owner tracked the metal to the home of Mr. West on
Courtney Road.
According to incident reports, Mr. West and Mr. Tiggs returned to the
home and admitted taking the metal and stated they paid Mr. Robertson
$20 to take them to a location to retrieve scrap iron. Mr. West told
deputies they were on their way back to get more. Both were arrested at
that time.
A warrant was obtained for Mr. Robertson’s arrest and he was taken into
custody on Sunday.
The men told the friend of the victim they had permission to take the
scrap iron, reports stated. The value of the scrap metal was stated to
be $1,200.
In another unrelated theft last week, over $150 worth of scrap iron was
taken from a home on Cold Springs Road. That case is currently under
investigation. According to recent reports, thefts of copper have
dropped and the theft of scrap iron, which is harder to trace, has
increased.
