Robbers strike twice within an hour Thursday night
web
posted April 30, 2010
JOHNSTON – Two men fitting the description
of the armed robbers at Billy’s Superstore in Trenton on Saturday may
have struck again in North Augusta. An hour later they may have been
involved in an attempted robbery in Johnston. Two armed black
males robbed the Circle K store on Highway 25 near I-20 and fled the
scene on foot around 10:20 pm Thursday. Less than an hour later, two
men fitting the same description tried to rob an employee at the Gary’s
Restaurant in Johnston.
Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston said the female employee was leaving
the restaurant carrying a bag and heard the two men coming out of the
shrubbery bordering the rear of the parking lot. The woman tried to
jump in her car and lock the doors, “but one of them was able to snatch
the door open”, Chief Aston said. “One of them kept yelling at her to
‘give me the bag, give me the bag’ and cussing at her,” Aston said.
As they tussled the bag, containing only ice, fell to the ground and
broke open. It was then the woman told the men she had a gun and
reached in her pocketbook and the two men fled the scene. She then
called 911 to report the crime.
Chief Aston said the men fit the same description as the armed robbers
in North Augusta at the Edgefield County line and the Billy’s Store,
“but it’s too early to tell,” if it was in fact the same robbers.
The only difference in the recent robberies is that the men were not
seen with guns. “If they had a weapon they did not present it,” Chief
Aston said. “Since she was alone they might have figured they didn’t
need to present one.”
Whether or not the two men were armed or tried to steal money or ice
mattered little in the investigation. “We’re going to treat it the
same,” Aston said.
The Sheriff’s Bloodhound Team arrived on the scene around midnight and
began tracking the two suspects. They had little success and the
perimeter was lifted around 12:30 am.
Chief Aston said the men were dressed in all black wearing gloves and
ski masks and fled the scene towards Edisto and Addison Street. One
suspect is around 6 foot and the second around 5’ 6” to 5’ 8”.
Anyone who may have seen the men in the area is asked to call the
Edgefield County Sheriff’s Dispatch at 803-637-5337. You can provide
information and remain anonymous.
Edgefield Daily was unable to get any updates from the North Augusta
Public Safety on the case at the Circle K robbery.
