Helicopter flies injured Johnston man from crash scene

web posted May 11, 2007
JOHNSTON – Shortly after noon Thursday Johnston Police, Johnston Fire Department, and County EMS personnel were called to the scene of a two-car crash at the corner of Edisto and Academy Streets. One of the vehicles, a Chrysler van, overturned and the driver was trapped inside.

Firefighters and EMS personnel extricated the man from the van and immobilized his and placed him in an ambulance to be transported to the landing zone located at the old National Guard Armory to be flown to MCG Trauma Unit in Augusta. A Life Reach helicopter arrived a short time later to transport the injured man. He was said to be suffering from a broken arm and complained of chest and stomach pain but was “stable”.

The collision occurred as the van was traveling south on Edisto Street when it was struck in the rear by a green Chevy pick-up truck exiting Academy Street. The impact caused the driver of the van to lose control and overturn a short distance away. Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston said the driver of the pick-up would be charged for failure to yield right of way in the collision. Chief Aston said the driver of the truck claimed not to have seen the van when entering the intersection from a stop sign.

The condition of the injured man, a Johnston resident, was not available later in the day.
