Number of young girls reported as victims of sex crimes by older males climbs
Police launch multiple investigations

web posted May 15, 2007
JOHNSTON – Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston said Monday that his department is currently investigating two criminal sexual conduct cases that involve minors, one being a 13-year-old girl. In that case, Chief Aston said, the alleged contact was made by a 19-year-old male. The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office is assisting in the investigation.

According to police reports the young girl told officers that she snuck out of her home in Johnston to meet the man and then had “consensual sex” in a car at an undisclosed location. Chief Aston said he was releasing the information but due to the ongoing investigation names were being withheld at this time.

The case comes on the heals of another investigation Chief Aston said his department was working on. The earlier case, reported on May 6, involves the mother of a 14-year-old girl who notified police that her daughter had gone to a motel with a 21-year-old man in order to have sex. Chief Aston said there is currently a question as the age of the male suspect. “We’re looking at it right now,” Aston said, adding that if the named suspect is over the age of 18 years criminal sexual conduct charges would be pursued.

There seems to be an onslaught of similar crimes in the recent weeks. Last week Edgefield Police arrested a 13-year-old boy in connection to two sexual assault cases involving victims younger that 13. He is currently being held in Columbia at the Department of Juvenile Justice awaiting a hearing in Family Court in Edgefield this week.

The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a case that involves a girl between 12 and 13 years old that is alleged to have been assaulted by a man, possibly 20 to 22 years of age, which information received says she may have been “dating”. The details of that case have not been released in incident reports by the Sheriff’s Office and all information is considered unverified at this time.

Johnston Police Chief Aston said he would be releasing more information on the current cases his department is investigating as it became available.
