Driver, Passenger Flee Crash after Short Chase

web posted May 20, 2014

JOHNSTON A Johnston Police Officer on patrol spotted a vehicle driving on Academy Street and had no tail lights. The officer activated his blue lights to conduct a traffic stop and the driver turned on Lee Street and sped away. The officer then activated his siren and notified dispatch he was in a chase with the vehicle on Lee Street heading towards Slide Hill Road.

Edgefield County Deputies converged on the area to aid in stopping the driver. The car turned onto Slide Hill Road and continued to speed away and crashed into an embankment at the intersection with Weaver Road.

Both the driver and the passenger jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot into a nearby wooded area. Deputies, Edgefield Police and the Highway Patrol set up a perimeter but was unsuccessful in apprehending the two suspects.

A check on the tag revealed the owner and further investigation led to the identity of the driver, a 20-yearold Johnston man. Warrants were being sought for his arrest for faulty equipment, failure to stop for blue lights and siren and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

As of Monday morning, he had not been taken into custody.

The chase took place late Wednesday night, however; the incident report on the case was not released until Monday.
