Pedestrian killed in Early Morning Johnston Train Accident

At 1:59am Monday morning Edgefield County dispatchers put out a call of a pedestrian who had been struck by a westbound Norfolk Southern train In Johnston SC.

An individual, who identified himself as “John”, called 911 operators and reported the incident.

The male victim, Jose Bernal, 28 was lying on the railway at the time of the accident. The call which was sent to deputies and EMS workers stated at the time it was a “signal nine” or a “dead on arrival” and the Edgefield County Coroner was called to the scene to pronounce the victim’s death.

Investigators from the National Transportation Authority have been notified and the train has been “locked down” at the scene and the railway closed until investigators can determine the cause of the accident. The accident has closed off the lower part of Calhoun Street in Johnston as rescue workers worked to remove the body from under the train, reportedly some twenty cars back from the engine and investigators begin to gather information. Johnston and Edgefield County officers responded to the scene as well as Edgefield County EMS workers.

According to the Johnston Police Department the victim had been arguing with his wife and left the home before going to sleep on the tracks. Some sources stated he had been intoxicated and had laid down and covered himself with a blanket before being struck by the train.
