Johnston business targeted for burglary, theft total could reach $100,000

web posted May 30, 2009
JOHNSTON – A burglary at the Mid-Atlantic Saw and Seal Company, located at 390 Park Avenue in Johnston, may well lift the total of property stolen in the last two months beyond a quarter million dollars. The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office was notified around 10 am of another burglary when the owners discovered the business had been robbed, vandalized, and over $50,000 worth of property stolen. Early estimates say the total could reach closer to $100,000 once an inventory is done of stolen property and damages.

According to available information, multiple individuals pried open a shop door to gain access to the building. Once inside they ransacked the offices, took the keys to a new Ford F350 truck, and hooked it to a 25 to 30 foot trailer to make off with the equipment. Several of the outside security lights were disabled to held shield the burglars from view.

Several industrial pieces of equipment were removed from the trailer in order to make way for the equipment the robbers had their sites set on. The burglars are believed to have even used a forklift at the company to load some of the equipment onto the trailer.

The initial list of stolen equipment included the Ford F350 pickup ($30-$40,000), the industrial duel wheel trailer, ($4-$5,000), two new 4-wheelers, a riding mower, and a plasma torch, tanks, and associated equipment. Rough estimates reached well beyond $50,000.

A full account of what was taken will not be available until business owners can sort through the remains to determine the extent of the loss.
