Probationer Arrested with Illegal Pistol

web posted June 3, 2014

JOHNSTON Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies arrested a man on probation for assault and battery in the second degree with illegal possession of a pistol, moreover, the serial number to the gun had been "scratched off". The discovery came after a car that Gary Cortrell White, 26, was a passenger in stopped at a checkpoint at the intersection of Lanier and Bland Baptist Roads early Sunday morning.

When a deputy approached the car he smelled a strong odor of alcohol and motioned for another deputy to assist him having the driver and three passengers exit the vehicle. In plain view deputies saw an open container of beer and while retrieving it from the car discovered the handle of a pistol sticking out of compartment on the back of the driver's seat.

At that point all occupants were ordered to the ground until the gun could be secured. White, according to an incident report, admitted the gun was his and he placed it in the compartment when he was picked up as the four were heading to a club in Johnston.

The report stated White admitted scratching the serial number off the gun, also a felony, because he was on probation and that he bought the gun in Atlanta a few years ago because someone had threatened his sister.

The pistol, a P95 Ruger 9mm, had a clip with 13 rounds inserted though no round was found in the chamber. The pistol was seized and White was charged with illegal possession of a pistol and released later on a $2,000 bond. No court date was available.
