Johnston Man Charged in Attempted Murder

web posted June 7, 2014

JOHNSTON Johnston Police and Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies raced to the scene of a man with a gun pointed at a woman's head, and pulling the trigger. The woman, who was on the phone with 911 dispatchers, said the gun misfired at least twice before the man began hitting her in the head with the butt of the gun.

A Johnston Police Officer arrived at the Sandra Drive home and found the man at the back of his car, gun in hand, with the trunk of the car open. The officer ordered the man to put the gun down three times at gunpoint before he complied. Jimmy Christopher Burton, 47, was taken into custody without further incident as deputies arrived.

Officers recovered a single shot 20 gauge shotgun and live shells in the trunk of the car, which were seized as evidence. When the officer asked Burton what he was doing he reportedly said "I brought the wrong gun that's the reason the b**** is still living," an incident report states.

The woman did have injuries from being struck with the butt of the gun, but none were serious.

Burton has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He is being held without bond pending a bond hearing with a Circuit Court Judge.
