Johnston man held on custody order in Saturday stabbing

web posted June 13, 2006

JOHNSTON – An early morning altercation ended with one man being stabbed and another man being sought for assault and battery with intent to kill Saturday. Shortly before 4:00 am an Edgefield man was dropping off a Johnston woman at her apartment on Slide Hill Road. While sitting in his car he heard the woman scream and ran to help. When he entered the breezeway between the apartments he encountered another man and an argument ensued. The Edgefield man said the other man swung at him and he felt a sharp burning sensation as he fell to the ground. It was then he realized he had been stabbed.

An Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy on patrol spotted a car running a stop sign and conducted a traffic stop. The car pulled over and the man got out of the car with his right hand holding his left side. At first the deputy thought the man was reaching for a weapon and then saw the blood coming from the man's left side in the chest area. EMS was called to the scene and all parties returned to the incident location. The suspect, later identified as Travis West, 29, of Hardy Place Road in Johnston, left the scene before officers could arrive.

The woman had also allegedly been assault by Mr. West and EMS transported the man and the woman to the Edgefield County Hospital for treatment of their injuries. The bloodhound team arrived at the location to try to find Mr. West but after an exhaustive search he could not be found.

Later in the day, Saturday, Mr. West was located and arrested. He is being held at the Edgefield County Detention Center on a custody order while warrants for assault and battery with intent to kill, assault and batter of a high and aggravated nature, and burglary in the first degree are being sought. Assault and battery with intent to kill is South Carolina’s equivalent of attempted murder.

Those warrants have not been obtained as of midnight Monday.
