Strom Thurmond FFA Attends 87th Annual South Carolina FFA Convention

web posted June 20, 2014

JOHNSTON – The Strom Thurmond Career & Technology Center FFA Association took home many of South Carolina’s top FFA honors this past week at the 87th Annual South Carolina FFA Convention.  The convention was held on the campus of Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina June 11-13, 2014. There were seventeen FFA members representing the Strom Thurmond chapter as well as their advisers Darla Steele and Jeremy Brooks.
The Strom Thurmond FFA Chapter competed in competitions, was named a National FFA Silver Emblem Chapter and a 100% plus membership chapter award based upon the active membership and participation of over 200 students in various projects and activities throughout the school year. Not only was Strom Thurmond FFA successful on a chapter level, but several members also received individual awards as part of the State FFA Convention.  The chapter was named the winner of the convention T-shirt design, as well as being recognized for two $1,000 scholarships for Thurmond FFA Seniors Rachel Farmer and Karson Barrett.  The Turfgrass and Nursery/Landscape Teams were also recognized for their state championships earlier in the year.
Morgan Spaulding, Karson Barrett, Kayce Locklair, Jacob Smith, Brittany Hutchins and Rachel Farmer all also earned the coveted South Carolina State FFA Degree, the highest level of recognition that the state FFA can confer and Robbie Guess and Ryan Thurmond earned their American FFA Degrees. The American FFA Degree is the highest National Student award to be recognized for.

Lastly, six students competed in state contests while attending the State Convention. Leigh Northrop competed in the Prepared Public Speaking contest where she prepared a memorized 5 minute speech on "Certified SC Grown" and recited it along with questions. Caroline Ball memorized the 5-paragraph FFA Creed and recited it, along with answering questions about it. Ms. Northrop also performed the Shag, South Carolina’s state dance at the General Session with Parker Wade. Caroline was named the 3rd place winner for the state! Also, the Farm Business Team won the State Contest and will now advance on to Nationals in Louisville, KY in Oct. The team was made up of members: Brittany Hutchins, Lucky Bailey, Hunter Herrin and Bailey Pedersen. Miss Pedersen was also named the 2nd place overall individual winner for the whole contest.

These achievements would not be possible without great FFA members, their parents, the Strom Thurmond faculty and administration, and our wonderful community support.  FFA is a student organization set up by the United States Education Department in Washington, D.C. The FFA is an integral part of the high school agriculture department. The Strom Thurmond Career & Technology Center Agriculture Department offers courses and internship opportunities in the areas of agricultural science, wildlife management, horticulture, turf grass, agribusiness, equipment operations, agricultural mechanics, and environmental science.

The Strom Thurmond FFA Association had 197 members this past year and participated in over 100 activities outside the classroom that complemented all the skills students learn in the classroom.  All of the hard work and dedication by the students and teachers helped the Thurmond FFA Chapter to land one of the top agriculture programs in the state and nation.
