Card game leads to weapons charge

web posted June 25, 2008
JOHNSTON – Johnston Police arrested 30-year-old Kelvin Bernard Braxton, of Holmes Pond Road, Johnston, Sunday evening after an argument during a card game ended with Braxton accused of pulling out a .45 caliber pistol and pointing it at the victim with children and other adults present. He fled the scene before police arrived.

According to police reports, Mr. Braxton and another man began arguing during a card game and both men made threats towards each other. Witnesses and the victim told police that Braxton then walked outside the home and returned with the pistol and pointed it at the victim in a threatening manner.

Johnston Police and Sheriff’s Deputies converged on the area and were able to obtain Braxton’s name and vehicle description and located the vehicle parked behind his residence. According to police reports, Braxton was not at the home but was contacted by a family member by cell phone and he returned to the home.

Once at the home Mr. Braxton spoke with officers and told them where the pistol was located in the home. When officers were given permission to search the home by the homeowner the gun was recovered and Braxton was placed under arrest.

He was transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center and booked on a single charge of pointing and presenting a firearm. He was released on Monday on a $2,000 bond. The pistol was taken as evidence and the registration showed no irregularities.

No court date was available.

The incident occurred just hours after the murder of Raymond Merriwether of Trenton was discovered.
