Historic Johnston Mural to be repainted – no suspects in gang tagging

web posted June 26, 2008
JOHNSTON – The historic Mural at the municipal parking lot is now covered with several tarps to block the view of the gang related paintings, otherwise known as “tagging” that were left after a June 5 vandalism across the town. Johnston Police are no closer today to identifying the culprits but they remain on alert for signs of gang members. “We know what to look for as far as clothing worn by the gang,” Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston said. The “colors”, or clothing styles, of the 18th Street gang is strictly adhered to by its members. Aston said neither he nor his officers have spotted anyone matching the description. “We’re keeping our senses up though,” Aston said.

Johnston Mayor Willie Campbell said he had the tarps placed over the Mural in an effort to shield the view of the gang symbols. “I began getting complaints,“ Mayor Campbell said, “I wanted to act quickly. It (the content) sends a message - a way of communication that gangs are trying to move into small towns.” Mayor Campbell said he wanted to have the Muriel repainted within 48 hours, but that will not happen until August.

Columbia artist Ralph Waldrof has been hired to paint over the graffiti at a cost of $3,500. Waldrof is said to be the original artist who painted the mural twenty years ago. The entire artwork will not be repainted, just the areas that were damaged. Mayor Campbell said it would be tedious work as the paint colors have faded over the years and will take time to match.

The cost of the work will be partially covered by insurance, Mayor Campbell said, “the town will have to pay the deductible, and then they (the insurance company) will pick up the rest.”  Town crews are said to be repainting the doors of the library and other portions of the building that were also targeted.

Police Chief Aston said that although there have been no further incidents or indications of gang activity he was not ruling out the possibility the gang is already in Johnston. It is their belief that the persons responsible came to Johnston from a surrounding county but his officers are keeping a watchful eye for even the most subtle hint. Aston said his main goal is to make sure no gang “takes root” in Johnston.
