Sawyer Alley Restaurant opens in Johnston

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted June 30, 2005

Sawyer Alley, located on the corner of Mims and Calhoun Street in downtown Johnston, opened its doors for business June 15. The owner, Betsy Watson, said this is her first experience in the restaurant business but the plan took a lot of hard work which she and family members would all pitch in on. Betsy Watson is also a full time labor and delivery nurse at the Greenwood Hospital. So far the hard work it is paying off. Mrs. Watson said last Friday night the number of customers were double the expectations. A good problem to have.

The new restaurant features a wide selection of menu items which include seafood, steaks, home made chicken salads, grilled chicken breasts, to frog legs and more. “Our crab cakes are very popular,” Mrs. Watson told Edgefield Daily.com adding that in the near future she intends to have entertainment on Friday nights. “We are thinking about doing a wine tasting night as well,” Watson said.

“We try to keep a “Fresh Market” feel to our menu,” Mrs. Watson told us referring to using only the freshest produce and spices and working with local farmers as well, “I believe in supporting the county.” Sawyer Alley is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 am till 2 pm for lunch and reopens from 6 pm till 9:30 pm for dinner. But Watson said even those hours are not written in stone, “As long as people are coming we will keep the grill on,” saying that one night they served till 10:30 pm.

Patrons of the restaurant were well pleased with the service and the food while we were there and others who come “are in for a real treat,” one woman said.  The warm atmosphere of pine floors, stained wood work and old brick gives the comfortable feeling of being right at home but with better service. Betsy Watson praised her staff and the effort they give in serving customers and doing their job, “they are really great,” she said commenting on how eager they were to please.

Sawyer Alley has definitely filled a niche by bringing fine dining in a casual setting to Johnston and Edgefield County. Edgefield Daily.com wishes Betsy Watson and her staff the best and continues to support and promote new businesses in the county.
