Money repaid in Johnston theft?

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted July  15, 2005

JOHNSTON - According to information recieved by Edgefield Daily.com, Tina Smallwood, 42, who was arrested on June 29, 2005, has been said to have returned a large portion of the cash she is charged in stealing. As Edgefield Daily.com has followed the claim of a reported theft of more than $19,000 from a Johnston man and the arrest of Ms. Smallwood that followed, the case seems to be getting a bit questionable and confusing.

Sources in the Johnston area now indicate that Ms. Smallwood has allegedly returned between $10,000 and $12,000 in cash to the victim.

Edgefield County Sheriff's Chief Investigator Randy Doran would not confirm nor deny the information and said that they are still investigating the matter and that interviews continue. According to reports the victim has not provided any verifiable proof he was in possession of the claimed $19,000 in cash.

Lt. Chris Wash said that reporting such a crime and not being able to prove the claim  could possibly lead to charges of the false reporting of a felony depending on the advice of the solicitors office, which is where all charges are determined. Including those brought against Ms. Smallwood.

Ms. Smallwood, who has no verifiable source of income that we have found, was released on a $2500 cash bond days after her arrest.

However, Edgefield Daily.com has learned the victim, in the recent past, did receive a legal settlement in excess of the claimed amount.

Edgefield Daily.com will continue to follow the story.
