Copper, scrap metal thefts continue

web posted July 12, 2008
JOHNSTON – Copper thefts continue to strike air conditioning units across the county and the thieves are getting brazen enough to strike the same location after repairs have been made. The most recent theft this week found Stone Manufacturing targeted and a $7,000 HVAC unit destroyed for the copper tubing.

The commercial unit will bring those responsible only a minimal amount of money in scrap copper but the theft, due to the amount of damages, is considered grand larceny which is a felony. A similar crime was reported at the business on Wren Drive about two months ago. Police are still investigating the theft and have stepped up patrols in the area.

A second theft was reported from Murphy’s Pub on the 600 block of Calhoun Street in Johnston when a refrigeration unit was reported stolen on Thursday afternoon. An officer on patrol later located the refrigerator behind another business at 2 am. The owner of the business was not available and was to be questioned about the recovered item.

Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious people in and around businesses and homes, primarily if they are driving trucks that have scrap metal and look out of place.

To report suspicious activity call the E911 Dispatch at 806-637-5337 or 803-278-1625.
