Bloody hat, footprints, smears leads to investigation in Johnston web posted July 20, 2007 JOHNSTON – Early Thursday morning the Johnston Police Department began receiving calls from businesses reporting large amounts of blood at the locations. The first call came from Goodfellas Laundromat on Lee Street where blood was found on the floor and other areas of the business around 6:30 am, including bloody shoe prints, a bloody hat, a large wooden stick with blood on it, and a blood trail. Later, blood was found on gas pumps at a nearby gas station. Chief Aston said officers began following the blood trail in an effort to try to locate the injured person. “We didn’t know what happened,” Aston said. As the blood trail led away from the gas station the footprints and blood stopped. Police believe the person must have gotten a ride. Video surveillance camera tapes showed a man at the laundromat just before 4 am. According to police the man is seen coming in an out of the building several times and remains in the area for close to two hours. At times he is seen carrying the stick. Chief Aston said at that time they were able to identify the man. His identity has not been released. It was then discovered that the man was picked up by a Saluda County Deputy later in the morning while he was walking, claiming he was on his way to Columbia, and given a courtesy ride to the Saluda and Aiken County line. Chief Aston said Saluda County reported the man had some lacerations to his hand but the injury did not appear serious. As of Thursday afternoon Chief Aston said they have not made contact with the man to find out how he was injured. The case is still under investigation. For
