Arrest Made in Attempted Rape Investigation

web posted July 22, 2014

JOHNSTON An arrest has been made in an investigation of an alleged rape of a 64-year-old Johnston woman back in February. Bruce Russell Smith, 49, was taken into custody and has been charged with assault and battery in the second degree in connection to the 3 am attack. As Edgefield Daily reported, the woman claimed Smith struck her in the face knocking her out for a few moments and when she awoke in a ditch Smith was trying to rape her.

The woman reported that she was able to fight Smith off of her and told him she was going to call 911, resulting in Smith leaving the scene. However, the woman continued home and was taken to the Edgefield County Emergency Room for treatment. ER workers then called Johnston Police to respond to the report.

Smith was taken into custody on Wednesday, July 16, and was released the next day on a $2,000 surety bond. No court date was available.

The victim identified Smith as her attacker when the original report was taken by police.

Several calls for a booking photo went unanswered Monday.

UPDATE: Booking photo was received Tuesday afternoon.
