Johnston home struck by lightning

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted July  29, 2005

JOHNSTON – The strong thunderstorms that moved through the county brought some much needed rain and some not so welcomed lightning. The storms built in strength as they moved on a northwesterly track from Columbia and Richmond Counties in Georgia into Edgefield County. By the time they reached Johnston there were winds gusting to 60 mph in some locals and numerous lightning strikes, one to a home in Johnston.

A call came into the E911 center at 5:44 pm of a house being struck by lightning. The house, located at 300 Academy Street in Johnston, had been definitely been struck and there was a possible fire as smoke was present. The Johnston Fire Department was on the scene in minutes and found that the strike had knocked plaster off the wall and ceiling and left a hole in the wall.

Firemen reported some smoke and continued to search the home for a fire and deemed the house safe a short time later
