Shoplifter leads police on foot chase and manhunt

web posted July 29, 2006

JOHNSTON – An employee called Johnston Police reporting shoplifting by two men at a market on Lee Street around 4:30 on Wednesday afternoon. When the officers arrived the men were already gone but a review of the video tape of surveillance camera showed the men taking two packs of steaks valued at about $20. One of the men was identified by the officers as David Deon Smith. On Friday afternoon an officer spotted Mr. Smith and a foot chase turned into a short manhunt.

Mr. Smith was spotted off Lanier Road and broke from the officer and headed into a wooded area. Johnston Officers and Sheriff’s Deputies cordoned off a perimeter and began searching the area and possible homes Mr. Smith may be heading to.

After about an hour Johnston Police had Mr. Smith, 37, of Lakeview Drive, in custody and transported him to the Edgefield County Detention Center where he was booked on charges of shoplifting of less than $1,000 and resisting arrest. He is still being held at this writing.

No information was available on the second suspect in the theft.
