Midday shooting in Johnston under investigation

web posted August 14, 2009
Below: Investigator Lamaz Robinson speaks with witnesses
JOHNSTON – Johnston Police raced to the May Street Apartments Thursday afternoon around 1 pm with a report of a shooting. Shortly after the first officers arrived they found chaos with a number of people in a panic claiming someone had been shot and taken from the scene in a car. As the investigation continued, area hospitals were notified to be on the look out for a gunshot victim possibly arriving.

Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston said early on in the investigation that they were getting conflicting stories as to the shooting victim. “Some say it was a male and others say it was a female.” The general story given by witnesses, at least those that were cooperating, seemed to be consistent.

Three black males arrived at the apartment complex, got out of a car, which then took off, and the confrontation took place. Two to four shots were fired and the two people being shot at jumped into another vehicle and fled the scene. One was reported to have acted as if they were struck by one of the rounds. The three men, all dressed in white t-shirts and jeans, fled the scene on foot through a yard across the street towards Addison Street.

As the investigation unfolded, Chief Aston said the two intended victims, a male and female, both returned to the scene later in the day and were uninjured. They were being interviewed as part of the investigation.

Chief Aston said they have several good leads and believe that have identified at least one of the suspects. The investigation was ongoing and some details are not being released at this time, Aston said.

“Right now we know nobody was shot,” Chief Aston said, “but there were shots fired. We’re not sure what led to the shooting at this time.” No shell casings were found at the crime scene leading Chief Aston to say that the gun used was most likely a revolver. “We don’t know what caliber of the weapon,” Aston said and they are not sure where the rounds went after missing their intended target at this time.

An arrest was made at the scene but it was unrelated to the shooting Chief Aston said.
