Intoxicated Pedestrian Busted for Crack Possession

web posted August 16, 2014

JOHNSTON   Johnston Police were called to a report of an intoxicated man walking down the middle of Church Street around 8:30 Thursday night. When they arrived they found the man at the intersection of Church and Butler Streets. As they approach the man he fell to the ground in front of the patrol vehicles, but was not injured. His luck went downhill from there.

According to an incident report, the man, identified as 50-year-old Stanley Bernard Smith, of Young Street in Johnston, was walking with an open container of alcohol when officers arrived and found to be "heavily intoxicated".

After helping Smith to his feet, one of the officers reached down to retrieve Smith's hat and noticed what appeared to be whitish colored "rock" and asked Smith what it was. According to the report, Smith said it was his crack and that he had just purchased it at the May Street Apartments. He provided the man's street name and gave a description of the clothes he was wearing at the time of the purchase.

Smith was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, open container and possession of crack cocaine and booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center. The incident report did not state if officers tried to locate the dealer after the arrest.
