Attempted Burglary at Tidwell Jewelers - Police Seek Public's Help to ID Crooks

web posted August 16, 2014

JOHNSTON   Two men, "heavily dressed", in layers of clothes attempted to burglarize Tidwell Jewelers early Friday morning at 2:57 am by throwing a large brick through the glass on one of the front doors causing it to shatter. The men then started kicking out the rest of the glass so they could enter the store and begin filling bags they brought with them to carry their loot. However, when the audible alarm started going off the men looked around and then ran from the scene before police arrived.

Members of the staff were already at the store when a Johnston Police Officer arrived at 3:07 am, according to an incident report released Friday morning. The employees then played the video that had been recorded by the store's security cameras for the officer, producing a copy for the investigation.

Just prior to the burglary attempt, a dark colored pickup truck (left) is seen driving through the alley behind the store. It appears to be a single cab truck, long bed and has a chrome toolbox just behind the cab.

The two men were wearing layers of clothing to make their possible weight and frame size unable to be determined. One man was wearing a white bandana over his face with a ball cap, grey sweatshirt and jeans with light brown or tan hunting boots. The second man is wearing a light colored hoodie with a white stripped shirt on top, dark pants, dark shoes or boots and may be wearing a mask.

Due to the clothing worn police are unsure if the suspects are black or white.

Anyone with information or who may have seen a truck in the area around 3 am are asked to call Interim Police Chief Lamaz Robinson at the Johnston Police Department at 803-278-2488 or the Edgefield County Sheriff's Dispatch at 803-637-5337. You do have to give your name to provide information.
