Former Police Chief sues Town of Johnston, Town Councilman, and Sheriff
web
posted September 3, 2008
JOHNSTON – Former Johnston Police Chief
Lelex “Butch” Easler has filed a lawsuit naming the Town of Johnston,
Johnston Town Councilman Thomas “Tommy” Burton, Edgefield County
Sheriff Adell Dobey, and the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office as
defendants. The nine-page suit was filed in Edgefield County and all
parties have been served. The suit asks for a jury trial and seeks an
unspecified award for damages.
On Tuesday former Police Chief Easler said he tried several times to
meet with all the defendants named in the suit, and others that may be
added at a later date, to resolve the issues. “I just hated it had to
come to this to get the truth out,” Mr. Easler said. “But, if this it
what it takes, that’s what it takes.”
Former Chief Easler said the things that will come out during the trial
“will be interesting.”
The suit stems from the investigation by the South Carolina Law
Enforcement Division that left Chief Easler being placed on
administrative leave that ultimately lead to his dismissal even though
the investigation never led to any charges of Easler.
The investigation and suspension, a story broken
by EdgefieldDaily.com
in September of 2005,
placed Chief Easler on paid administrative leave until the matter could
be resolved.
However, during the nearly two-year long investigation, Johnston
elected a new Mayor, Willie Campbell, who fired
Chief Easler in May of
2006.
In December of 2006 EdgefieldDaily.com
discovered an unreleased
letter from the Attorney General’s Office written in October of
the
same year stating they were closing the case without bringing forth any
charges. The Town of Johnston, as well as Mayor Willie Campbell, were
advised of the situation but never released the letter until a copy was
published by EdgefieldDaily.com
The suit contains six “causes of action” against the defendants ranging
from Civil Conspiracy to Tortuous Interference with contractual
relation among others.
Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey said Tuesday he could confirm
service of the suit but he could not comment on the case saying the
lawsuit is in the hands of attorneys at this time and that all comments
would be deferred to them.
Repeated calls to the Town of Johnston went to a recording Tuesday
afternoon.
Former Police Chief Easler said there may be additional parties added
throughout the case.
The case is Civil Action No. 08 CP-19-166.
