Johnston Development Corporation prepares for future

web posted September 3, 2008
JOHNSTON – The Johnston Development Corporation, a non-profit volunteer organization that has helped the Town of Johnston grow in many ways for over 20 years, heard from the S.C. Department of Commerce that the Town of Johnston is poised for a better future.

But that future won’t come without a citizen-driven development plan.

The Johnston Development Board, which oversees the Corporation, has been gathering information on how to better proceed with growing and promoting the town.  Amy Blinson, Senior Community Development Manager for the Department of Commerce, was asked to comment on the Board’s current direction.

The Development Corporation already sponsors the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Peach Blossom Festival.

Ms. Blinson urged the group look into leading the town by sponsoring a developmental plan that takes into account economic development, housing, tourism and other aspects of life important to citizens.  Gathering this information, she said, will lead to specific goals and objectives that can give Johnston a great advantage in improving itself.

“It’s the way to help you move your town forward,” she said.  “These master development plans are a great tool for towns because they define exactly what you want to be and how to get there.”

Dean Campbell, Development Board Chairman, said the group is in its initial planning stages to determine the best planning tools to use.  He added that it will take more than the Development Board’s participation to achieve the goal.

“To succeed, we’ll need to partner with government, businesses, industries, nonprofit organizations and citizens to find the right plan that we can all execute,” he said.  “If we all approach this process with open minds and an eye on the horizon, we can find the answers to bring Johnston future prosperity.”

The Johnston Development Corporation works to aid the community in areas such as economic development, education, recreation, historic preservation, tourism, scientific and cultural opportunities, and continued promotion of Johnston.

The Johnston Development Board has also worked hard throughout the years to promote the Town, surrounding areas and businesses, complementing the work of the Town, Chamber of Commerce, local civic groups, as well as other local and Edgefield County organizations.
