Teen arrested on drug charge, mother angry at police for discovery web posted September 12, 2006 JOHNSTON – While Johnston Police and the South Carolina Highway Patrol were conducting a license check on Edisto Street and Slidehill Road a Johnston Police Officer noticed a car make a quick turn into a driveway of a home just before the location of the check point. The officer, being familiar with the homeowner, knew the three teens that exited the car did not live at the house. The teens were walking towards the back of the house in a hurried fashion. As the officer walked pass the car he noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from an open window and approached the three teens. At first the driver stated they wanted to talk to someone at the house and then said he was not going to lie. The driver stated he did not have his driver’s license with him and was trying to avoid getting into trouble. Having smelled the odor of marijuana the officer began searching the teens and the first one had what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette in his pocket. The teen admitted that he had smoked marijuana in the car earlier but the other two teens did not smoke any. With the teen’s permission the officer searched the car and discovered what appeared to be marijuana leaves and seeds inside the car. Due to the fact all three teens were juveniles their parents were called to the scene. When the teen charged with simple possession mother arrived she became irate. She informed the officer that she knows what her son looked like when he was smoking marijuana and that he did not look that way now. She also stated that no one smokes marijuana in her car and that she knew the teens were not smoking it in her car because she worked for the state of South Carolina and knows what it smells like and did not smell it in the car. The teen’s mother continued to argue while claiming the officer had destroyed her car during the search. The officer explained that the inside of the car was already in disarray before he searched the vehicle. Then the teen’s mother said that the officer should have waited until she arrived before doing anything to the teens because they were under the age of 18. The officer explained that he had probable cause plus the teen had already admitted to the offense. Due to the fact the teens were considered juveniles the one teen charged was issued a ticket for the possession of marijuana and all three were released to their respective parents. For
